Penfolds Celebrate 175 Years with a Tribute Collection

A Tribute for 175 years of Penfolds.

On the 18th June 1844, the Penfold family arrived in Adelaide onboard the Taglioni, with the ambition of building a new life away from the burden of debts left behind in England. The family purchased 500 acres of ‘the choicest land’ at Mackgill for £1,200 and established a vineyard. They named their cottage The Grange after Mary’s former home in Northumberland. Before leaving England, Penfold obtained vine cuttings that he cultivated to make wine for medicinal purposes.

And so the story began. 175 years on, out of what is now named Magill Estate, Penfolds celebrates it’s milestone anniversary with a release of limited-edition wines named and devoted to the characters who instrumental role in Penfolds journey. This isn’t the first time Penfolds have named wines after a past winemaker, however this Tribute Range, to launch in March, is like none other. There are four wines in the new tribute tier, dedicated to four people of Penfolds most influential characters who changed the course of history including Founders Mary and Dr Christopher Penfold, Chemist Ray Beckwith and Grange creator Max Schubert.

The Esteemed Creator, The Noble Explorer, The Commander In Chief, The Creative Genius. Within this divine collection of red wines lies grapes from the 2016 and 2017 vintages. Their DNA respectively is Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Shiraz Cabernet and Cabernet Sauvignon. One could quite easily go on and on in great lengths to describe each of these wines, the later three all priced at $40, however we want to focus on the crown jewel of the release.

Valued at $500, this 2016 Barossa Valley Shiraz Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon blend is something else. Labelled The Esteemed Creator this wine bares tribute to Chief Winemaker Max Schubert, a man who is close to the our heart. Last year we travelled to Penfolds to shoot a trailer for a new product, The Lot 1990 single batch Brandy, and we visited the winery where Schubert hid his famous early vintages of Grange. Just like many artists this mans true fame and recognition came long after his retirement and continues to blossom after his passing.

This wine is a quintessential blend of Australia’s two most profound regional and varietal alignments to make an age worthy wine which exudes Penfolds’ ‘House Style’. Despite maturation for 16 months in 100% new American oak, it is recommended you continuing cellaring until 2020-2050. This is not for the fainted hearted nor an entry level wine, this is a wine for appreciation. Take care when purchasing and take care when purchased.
