Shadowboxer Bar & Kitchen

South Yarra’s newest opening Shadowboxer is an absolute knockout!

It took me FAR less time to fall in love with South side’s newest summer hot-spot than it took Nunes to kick Rousey’s ass… and that was fast!

Out for the count as soon as I set foot on the terrace, the stylishly simple Shadowboxer offers a breath of fresh air for the upmarket and outdated South Yarra.

Between them, owners Luke Thompson, Michael Thom, Nick Aitken and Chef Liz Contini have a strong repertoire at venues like Lucky Coq, Naked For Satan and Borsh, Vodka & Tears.

With a focus on all things Australian, the kitchen dishes out jaw-dropping seasonal delights while the bar serves up a mean cocktail! The wine list is extensive and all Aussie, or if wine isn’t your thing (no judgement), these guys know how to SPRITZ! The “Local Spritz” was my repeat offender, an Australian “Aperol” with Applewood Okar, Prosecco, citrus and soda.

With an interior by award winning Fiona Lynch, the vibe is light, classic and comfortable. The artistically minimal interior is made easy by cool light fixtures and a feel-good soft pink feature wall behind the bar. Perch at the bar on a custom made stool, or grab yourself a table, but its pretty hard to beat a seat on the open-air three-tiered terrace.

The imaginative menu shifts smoothly between bar snacks, more serious portions and sweet treats. The duck ribs with house made BBQ sauce and jalapeno aioli were a welcome change from the usual pork or beef and were so succulent they had us licking the plate! The butterflied poussin, pumpkin, kale, smoked almonds golden raisins and jus is the Shadowboxer version of chicken and chips.

The chocolate tart was a taste of heaven, accompanied with honeycomb ice cream was that so goddam addictive I want to buy a lifetime supply so I will never have to go without.

In a city saturated with wine bars and restaurants, these guys have managed to create something special and uniquely refreshing. It is quintessential Melbourne dining (and wining) with a super fresh and polished edge.

Get in before the crowds, because these guys will be the Summer heavyweight champ!
